The façade with loggia form was redesigned by in 1743-1750 by Ferdinando Fuga. The Romanesque bell tower or Campanile was added in 1377 and is the tallest in Rome at a height of 75 metres. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the seven pilgrimage churches and the largest and most important shrine to the Virgin Mary in Rome. The church was founded in the 5th century during the time of Pope Sixtus III around the foundations of a smaller church and has various enlargements additions and embellishments made to the building over the centuries.
