  • Palmyra. Syria. An Arch opening in the south portico of the Great Colonnade street gives access to a road that runs around the hemicycle of the theatre. Constructed in the 2nd century AD, the whole Great Colonnade street cuts through the ancient city from east to west and is more than one kilometre in length. Half-way up each column are brackets that held projecting statues over the roadway.

Situated on a 55 meters high mound that has had different forms of defences for at least two thousand years, the impressive Citadel dominates the centre of Aleppo and is the city’s most spectacular sight.

  • View west to the Helios Temple ruins on the Acropolis upper terrace above the Commercial Agora at Arykanda, Southern Turkey.  The Temple was built by levelling the bedrock and measures 6.4 by 9.4 metres. Three steps of the Temple crepidoma are partially well preserved, however no architectural elements remain from its main structure above the stylobate.

  • The Tambo Parlour Car, a first-class carriage built in 1919, Maldon railway station, Victoria, Australia. Opened in 1884, the historic station served a vital role in supporting the gold mining industry and the economic development of the town and district in general. The Byzantine castle was reinforced with new buildings in order to serve the Struggle for independence. It is named after Lykourgos Logothetis, the local chieftain who organised a decisive naval victory over the Turks on August 6 1824. The town’s cemetery is beside the Kastro as is the church of Metamorfosis, built to celebrate the victory. Also in the Kastro grounds are ruins of two opulent villas of the Hellenistic period (2nd BC), Roman galleries and the remains of a 5th century Christian Basilica.  Pythagorio is a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site and is named after the great philosopher Pythaogaras who was born here in 580 BC.

Legend has it that she then took solace in the arms of Dionysus, Greek god of the vine and protector of Naxos.
