The statue on the far left of the image is the figure of the dressed youth which is particularly rare in the Archaic art of Attica, although not uncommon in Ionia. Dating from 560 - 550 B.C, the steeped pedestal originally contained 6 statues of which four have survived. The statues are representing a father, mother and children are of a distinguished family of the time.  Each of the figures has an inscription stating its name. The work displays interesting innovations that influenced the art of Ionia.

  • Greece. Samos.  Part view of the Tunnel of Eupalinos or Eupalinian aqueduct. Considered the 8th wonder of the ancient world and dating from around 550 BC during the time of the tyrant Polycrates rule of Samos, the 1350 metre long tunnel was built by the engineer Efpalinus improve the water supply to the city of Pythagorio by divert water from a spring through the mountain. The tunnel was simultaneously advanced from two opposing sides of the mountain and the workers met after five and half years of construction in the middle of the mountain. The tunnel was used for least a thousand years.

The Altar measured a massive 36 meters by 16 metres and the upper level which was reached by stairs was covered with green fire resistant ophite stone on which animals sacrifices too place.  The marble elements that have been restored indicatively belong to the last radical reconstruction of the altar during the reign of Augustus (1st century AD). . Heraion is the main sanctuary of ancient Samos and is located on the southeast coast, 6 km kilometres from Pythagoreio.

  • Greece. Samos. Pythagoreio. The Byzantine castle reinforced with new buildings in order to serve the Struggle for independence. It is named after Lykourgos Logothetis, the local chieftain who organised a decisive naval victory over the Turks on August 6 1824. The town’s cemetery is beside the Kastro as is the church of Metamorfosis, built to celebrate the victory. Also in the Kastro grounds are ruins of two opulent villas of the Hellenistic period (2nd BC), Roman galleries and the remains of a 5th century Christian Basilica.  The Kastro is in the pretty seaside town of Pythagorio which is a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site and is named after the great philosopher Pythaogaras who was born here in 580 BC.
