  • Naxos. Cyclades. Greece. The Kouros of Apollon lays abandoned in an ancient marble quarry near the pretty northern coastal village of Apollonas on the Island of Naxos. Unmoved for over two thousand years and dating from 600BC, the giant bearded Kouros (Statue of youth) is over 10 metres tall and is one of the largest statues ever found from Greek antiquity. It is thought to been abandoned unfinished due to faults in the marble. Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades archipelago and was major producer and exported of marble sculptures during antiquity.
