The harbour which is has a restored Venetian lighthouse at its entrance is ringed by pastel coloured charming old Venetian buildings elegant neo classical town houses and ottoman mosques whilst behind the waterfront are a delightful and atmospheric maze of winding narrow alleyways lined with colourful potted plants and replete with restored palaces, ornate doorways and balconies. Crete is Greece’s largest island and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean.

  • Athens. Greece. An archway stands on the original inner peristyled courtyard atrium of Roman Emperor Hadrian’s lavish Library built in 131 AD in Athens. Occupying the courtyard from 425 AD was a monumental Tetraconch Christian church which was then replaced by a 7th century church of which four standing columns survive. The library complex consisted of a vast library, a large courtyard with a garden and central pool, mosaics floors, numerous rooms and a facade adorned with Corinthian columns.

The completely marble stadium occupies the exact site of the original, built in 330BC which was used for the Panathenaic games. The current stadium was reconstructed from the remains of the original and used for the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens. In 1896 it had the capacity to seat 80,000 spectators, which has been reduced to 45,000 now. The Stadium hosted the archery competition and the finish of the Marathon in in the 2004 Olympic Games.

  • Naxos. Cyclades. Greece. The Kouros of Apollon lays abandoned in an ancient marble quarry near the pretty northern coastal village of Apollonas on the Island of Naxos. Unmoved for over two thousand years and dating from 600BC, the giant bearded Kouros (Statue of youth) is over 10 metres tall and is one of the largest statues ever found from Greek antiquity. It is thought to been abandoned unfinished due to faults in the marble.
