  • Naxos. Cyclades. Greece. The Kouros of Apollon lays abandoned in an ancient marble quarry near the pretty northern coastal village of Apollonas on the Island of Naxos. Unmoved for over two thousand years and dating from 600BC, the giant bearded Kouros (Statue of youth) is over 10 metres tall and is one of the largest statues ever found from Greek antiquity. It is thought to been abandoned unfinished due to faults in the marble.

Fronted by lawns, the attractive building has a Doric –columned entrance which is approached by a broad flight of steps. The building is known as the Palaia Vouli ( Old Parliament) and was the site of the Greek Parliament until 1935. In 1961 the building was opened as the Museum.

Occupying the courtyard from 425 AD was a monumental Tetraconch Christian church which was then replaced by a 7th century church of which four standing columns survive. The library complex consisted of a vast library, a large courtyard with a garden and central pool, mosaics floors, numerous rooms and a facade adorned with Corinthian columns.

The Temple is believed to be devoted to the mysteries and protector-goddess of the island and was unusual in having a square floor plan, whereas most Greek temples are rectangular.
