The fountain was built in the 2nd century AD, and was filled by spring water from the acropolis hill above. The water then flowed through the city via channels. It prospered during the Hellenistic period and from 133 BC was under the control of the Roman Empire. It flourished greatly under the Roman rule and into the early Byzantine period until it was abandoned in the 7th century AD. Most of the archaeological remains seen today are from the Roman period.
