The ancient city was dominated by a row of three colossal Greek colonnaded temples built in the 6th century BC, of which only foundations and scattered architectural fragments remain. There are also the remains of a Greek theatre, capable of seating 8000 spectators. Located on the Ionic coast of Basilicata in southern Italy, the city was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from the western Peloponnese. The city prospered during the 6th-5th centuries BC and the great mathematician, philosopher and alchemist Pythagoras founded a school in Metapontion in 510 BC after his expulsion from Croton. It is said that he died here.
