Completed in A.D. 80, the monumental four storey building is the largest amphitheatre ever built by the Romans and endures as an emblem of past glories. The Colosseum at its peak accommodated 70,000 spectators to watch gladiatorial contests, animal hunts and the arena could be flooded for mock sea battles. The Colosseum is a UNESCO world Heritage Site as part of the Historical centre of Rome listing.
