Erected during the 4th century AD, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls was built on the site where St. Paul was entombed. It was restored after a fire severely damaged it in 1823. The Papal Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls is one of Rome's four ancient, Papal major basilicas, along with the Basilicas of St. John in the Lateran, St. Peter's, and St. Mary Major.
