The Palestra is a composed of a central courtyard surrounded by Doric stoas and auxiliary rooms. Connected to the Gymnasium, the Palestra was used by Ephebes (young men in military training) and athletes. Ancient Messene was founded on the foothills of Mount Ithomi in 369 B.C as the ancient capital of liberated Messenia and its archaeological site is one of most impressive and least visited in Greece.
