Ancient Messene. Peloponnese. Greece. View of a section of the 9 kilometres long circuit wall, made of enormous limestone blocks, built during the 4th century BC to protect the city. Ancient Messene was founded on the foothills of Mount Ithomi in 369 B.C as the ancient capital of liberated Messenia and its archaeological site is one of most impressive and least visited in Greece.
