The political and religious heart of the city, the sanctuary’s courtyard was surrounded by four double stoas, had at least 140 bases from bronze honorary statues of eminent citizens and in its centre there was a Doric Temple. Ancient Messene was founded on the foothills of Mount Ithomi in 369 B.C as the ancient capital of liberated Messenia.
