Miletus. Turkey. Ancient Street close to the city’s centre. After the Persians destroyed Miletus in 499 BC, the city was rebuilt, and its streets were laid out according to the plan of Miletus native Hippodamus, inventor of the "Hippodamian grid." The Romans used the plan when introducing new cities and many new cities in the 20th century were founded using the gridiron as the principal method for laying out city blocks, lots, and houses (particularly in newly colonized continents in the Americas, India, and Australia). The ancient Greek city of Miletus is located in western Anatolia on the Aegean coast of Turkey.
