According to the famous ancient traveller Pausanias, the fountain house of the Agora was named after Arsinoe, daughter of Leukippos (Mythical King of Messenia) and mother of Asklepios. Ancient Messene was founded on the foothills of Mount Ithomi in 369 B.C as the ancient capital of liberated Messenia.
