Doric column of the great sculptor Damophon son of Philip Messenian in the sanctuary of Asclepius. Ancient Messene. Peloponnese. Greece. The column is 3.27 metres high and bears the decrees of seven cities who bestow honours to the Damophon for his generosity and piety for constructing and repairing of cult statues in their sanctuaries. A bronze statue of the artist was standing on the missing capital. Ancient Messene was founded on the foothills of Mount Ithomi in 369 B.C as the ancient capital of liberated Messenia.
