Ancient Greek inscribed base for a statute of a young female initiate or priestess. Ancient Messene. Peloponnese. The base is in a room divided in three aisles by two colonnades in the west wing of the Asklepieion and housed the sanctuary of Artemis Phosphoros and Orthia. Ancient Messene was founded on the foothills of Mount Ithomi in 369 B.C as the ancient capital of liberated Messenia.
