Perge. Antalya. Turkey. View towards the nymphaeum fountain with the reclining statue of the local river god Kestros or Cestrus in its centre at the northern end of the main colonnaded street. The fountain was built in the 2nd century AD, and was filled by spring water from the acropolis hill above. The water then flowed through the city via channels. The street extended for 300 metres from the Hellenistic gate to the monumental fountain at the base of the acropolis. The street was lined with shops on either side and in its centre is a water channel that ran its entire length and helped cool the city. The well preserved ancient city of Perge was founded by colonists originating from the Peloponnese in Greece.
