Greece. Samos. Boats ships sailing the Aegean Sea near the ruins of the old Byzantine castle in the town of Pythagoreio. The Kastro was reinforced with new buildings in order to serve the needs of the Struggle for independence and is named after Lykourgos Logothetis, the local chieftain who organised a decisive naval victory over the Turks on August 6 1824. The town’s cemetery is beside the Kastro as is the church of Metamorfosis, built to celebrate the victory. Also in the Kastro grounds are ruins of two opulent villas of the Hellenistic period (2nd BC), Roman galleries and the remains of a 5th century Christian Basilica. The Kastro is in the pretty seaside town of Pythagorio which is a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site and is named after the great philosopher Pythaogaras who was born here in 580 BC.
