Ancient Greek inscriptions on a North Stoa column of the Palaestra (Wrestling Hall) complex which dates from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD. Ancient Messene. Peloponnese. Greece. The inscriptions are of Ephebic catalogues with numerous names of Messene youth. The Palestra is a composed of a central courtyard surrounded by Doric stoas and auxiliary rooms. Connected to the Gymnasium, the Palestra was used by Ephebes (young men in military training) and athletes. Ancient Messene was founded on the foothills of Mount Ithomi in 369 B.C as the ancient capital of liberated Messenia.
