Rhodes. Greece. Evangelismos church tower and deer statue column standing on the historical spot of the Colossus of Rhodes. Two bronze statues (one depicting a stag and the other a doe) stand on columns guarding the Mandaraki harbour entrance where the bronze 35 metre (over 100-feet) Colossus of Rhodes was believed to have stood. Built in 305 BC, the Colossus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and depicted the sun god, Helios holding a flaming torch. A violent earthquake in 227 BC caused it to topple over. The island of Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Island group and one of the most popular Greek Islands.
