Perge. Antalya. Turkey. View of the reclining statue of the local river god Kestros or Cestrus in the centre of the nymphaeum fountain at the northern end of the main colonnaded street. The fountain was built in the 2nd century AD, and was filled by spring water from the acropolis hill above. The water then flowed through the city via channels. The well preserved ancient city of Perge was founded by colonists originating from the Peloponnese in Greece. It prospered during the Hellenistic period and from 133 BC was under the control of the Roman Empire.
