The National Gardens, a vast green refuge, an oasis in the centre of Athens. The National Gardens was formerly the Royal Palace gardens, built for Queen Amaila, and was laid out from 1838 to 1860 and landscaped by the Prussian horticulturist Friedrich Schmidt. Some 500 species of plants and trees from various locations around the world are grown here and the park's labyrinth of shady paths leads to ornamental ponds, flowerbeds, statues, a Botanical museum and even a small zoo.
