Images in this photo gallery are from Kos town, the colorful and laid back capital of the Greek island of Kos. Kos island is part of the Dodecanese island group and birthplace of the ancient physician and father of medicine, Hippocrates.
Standing at the entrance to the harbor is the medieval castle. Built by the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, who captured the island in 1314 and held it until 1522 when it fell to the Turks. The castle occupied a strategic position in that, together with the castle of Halikarnassos on the coast of Asia Minor opposite, it gave them (the Knights) control of the sea lanes. The city has many vestiges of its past that are spilt into archeological Zones (Western and Eastern). Standouts would have to be the ancient Agora, the restored section of the West Gymnasium built during the Hellenistic period and the restored 2nd century AD Roman Odeum or Odeon.
